Summary

U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon investigates the murder of eccentric prospector Pop McClooney, initially suspecting gambler Jack King after finding horse tracks. However, the case unravels when an assay report reveals Pop’s "fool's gold" was actually a massive, hidden fortune. The true culprit is exposed as the town’s laundress, who killed Pop and stole the gold after witnessing him count it, having overlooked her own clean laundry left in his shack.
