The Cynic Weekly - Jon Mackenzie On The Spectre of Pep
Summary
John McKenzie discusses his new book, *The Spectre of Pep*, which traces the evolution of modern football tactics from Guardiola’s rise to the current landscape. The conversation explores how Guardiola’s pragmatic flexibility and "rest defense" concepts contrast with the chaotic, high-pressing style popularized by Jürgen Klopp. McKenzie also analyzes Roberto De Zerbi’s inverted approach to space and argues that the tactical meta has shifted from pure control to a balance of complexity and simplicity.
