Summary
Following the Battle of Tinchebray, Henry I consolidated power in Normandy by restoring legal order and reclaiming seized lands. He released most prisoners but indefinitely detained his brother Robert Curthose and cousin William of Mortain, violating chivalric norms to secure his rule. Henry also placed Robert’s young son, William Clito, under the protection of a Norman ally to neutralize him as a political threat.
