Summary
Paladin travels to Greenwood, California, to assist Sheriff Clem Brady in solving the murder of Roy, a young man killed after winning at a saloon. While investigating, Paladin meets Roy’s widow, Martha Nell, and her suitor Sam, who initially appears to be the prime suspect. Paladin is shot in an alley, leading him to suspect the killer is still in town. Martha Nell eventually confesses to killing Roy to escape him and be with Sam, but she commits suicide before Paladin can formally arrest her.
