There's no single best podcast app. The right one depends on your phone, what you'll pay, and how much the ads bother you. This is a plain comparison of the apps worth considering, by the people who make Castria. We've said where the others are the better pick, and every claim below was checked on the date above.

The last column is the one most comparisons skip. Every mainstream app plays the ads inside episodes, because the ads are part of the audio file. A few apps can skip chapters you untick, which only helps when the publisher marks its ads as chapters.
Best podcast app for iPhone
Apple Podcasts is the easy default: it's already installed, it's free, and it works across your Mac, Apple TV, HomePod and Apple Watch. The only way to get ad-free episodes is to pay each show for a subscription, where the show offers one. Does Apple Podcasts have ads?
Overcast is the enthusiast's choice. Smart Speed and Voice Boost make talk shows shorter and easier to hear, and there's a good Apple Watch app. Castria vs Overcast
Castro is built around an inbox you triage, with a queue on top. It was sold to Maple Media, the company that owns Player FM, in October 2026, so it's worth watching how it changes.
Pocket Casts is the pick if you also use a Windows PC or an Android tablet. Castria vs Pocket Casts
Castria is the pick if you want the ads gone. Every episode it scans also gets a free summary and a list of tappable topics, so you can tell what's in it before you press play.
Best podcast app for Android
Overcast, Castro and Apple Podcasts aren't on Android, which narrows the field.
Pocket Casts is the most polished Android podcast app, with Wear OS and Android Auto support.
AntennaPod is free, open source and has no ads or account. It's the choice if privacy and simplicity matter most.
Podcast Addict has an enormous feature list and can also play internet radio. The free version shows ads.
Spotify makes sense if you already use it for music. Spotify Premium still plays podcast ads, though.
Castria runs on Android phones and tablets, with the same account and queue as on iPhone and the web, and it skips the ads.
Comparing just two?
How this page was put together
We make Castria, so we're not neutral. To keep it fair, every fact about another app comes from that app's own website, store listing or help pages, or from news coverage, checked on the date at the top. Prices are US prices from the app stores or the developer's site. If something here is out of date, email support@castria.app and we'll fix it.
